It’s February, Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and love is in the air. You’ve met that special someone, actually let’s just say you’ve met “someone,” because dating is hard. You’ve done your social networking creeping and they’ve passed the tests. It’s Friday night and they’re on their way to pick you up.
Here are some things to take into account while you’re riding in their car on the way to dinner. Let’s face it, you’ll be sitting there awkwardly anyway so take in the sights.
If she’s traveling with a portable makeup counter in her car, you might want to throw up the red flags. Sure you want someone who cares about their appearance, but there are limits. Her mirrors are supposed to be used to see what’s behind her and in the traveling lanes, not to check herself out.
While you’re riding with your date, see how they get when you ask to change the radio station, turn the heat up or down, or even open a window. If you try to roll down your window and there’s a child-lock activated preventing it, your date may like to control too many aspects.
You know how you did your Facebook creeping? They probably did too, so they might try to impress you with a playlist geared right to your liking. Toggle through the radio settings to see what they’re actually rocking out to. Remember that everyone has his or her guilty pleasures though, so keep an open mind.
People express themselves with bumper stickers and what they choose to put on their vehicle says a lot about them. Perhaps it’ll tell you about their career, interests, or maybe that they’re witty.”I brake for yard sales,” might have you kicking them to the curb while “seven days without puns makes one weak,” may make you chuckle. Pay attention!
We’re all guilty of letting the check-engine light stay on a little too long before taking it in to get checked. But if your date picks you up with a bevy of dashboard lights on putting your safety at risk, it might be hard to see paradise with them.
If you can, try to get a glimpse of your date’s glove compartment. Whether you stealthily “accidentally” open it or perhaps you sneeze and you’re just looking for a tissue, finding your way in will be a task. Once there though, you’ll get a look at everything your date may be hiding and can’t travel without.
Is that love in the air? Nope, that’s just your date’s car that smells. Hygiene is important and a conveniently placed air freshener can make all the difference. You don’t want anything that’s too overpowering that you’re bathing in pine trees though. Simple cleanliness is all you ask.
Check out your date’s car when they pick you up. If it has a bike or surfboard rack on the roof, you might be in for an adventurous type who will make your date much more interesting than just a dinner and movie. Maybe they have an acoustic guitar in the backseat. Ask them to play it to make sure their hobbies are actually real and not just for show.
The remnants of fast food, water bottles, receipts, and napkins litter all of our cars. Most of us take the time to clean our vehicle out on a regular basis though. If your date thought it was acceptable to pick you up without straightening up, leave them with the parting gift of a trash bag rather than a kiss.
If your date picks you up with fuzzy seat covers, a steering wheel displaying their favorite childhood cartoon, or a big pair of dice hanging from the mirror, just send them on their way. You’ve come down with a cold, you have to wash your hair, or your friend just called you and really needs your help.
