Huntington Beach Chrysler Service Department Post-Collision Checklist

Thursday, 12 February, 2015

Accidents happen, no matter how good of a driver you are or how careful you travel on the road. They just occur and while we all hope to never be placed in such a situation, being prepared can make all the difference. Staying calm and following some simple steps can save lives and get you back on the road quickly.

Every driver is responsible for knowing what to do if they’re involved in a collision. The first step is a simple one, making sure everyone involved is safe. We at your Huntington Beach area Chrysler Service Department see the aftermath of these collisions and we hope for healthy outcomes for all involved.

To ensure your safety, we’ve compiled a checklist to follow in the event of a collision. With a little help from us, you’ll always be prepared!

    1. Assist
Immediately after your collision, make sure you and any of your passengers are ok. Then, check on the other motorists involved in the accident. If there are any injuries and medical attention is needed, call 9-1-1. If there are no serious injuries, next make sure you are not in danger on the road.
    2. Control
After you determine that there are no serious injuries and before you plan on exchanging information, it’s important that you get to the side of the road. In order to relieve traffic congestion, put your hazards on, light road flares, or put up traffic cones and slowly make your way to the shoulder. Do not leave the scene of the crash, but find a place where you and the other vehicle are out of harm’s way.
    3. Notify
Always remember that the law requires you to notify the police. No matter how small the accident is or what the other party says, call the police and file a report. If the police do not arrive to open an investigation, you can visit the local police department or automobile insurance agency in the following days. It’s important to have a file if a liability is claimed.
    4. Document
From witnesses to parties involved, remember to exchange and gather all information. Future paperwork will have to be completed so attain these: names, addresses, vehicle information, vehicle license plate, driver’s license numbers, insurance carriers and policy numbers, photos of location and damage.
    5. Insurance You will have to notify your insurance carrier to start the proper claim filing. Many companies have staff available 24/7 to assist immediately for cases like a collision. Having proof of insurance in your vehicle is required by law and makes filing a claim easier.
    6. Unattended
If you happen to get in a collision with an unattended vehicle or property, it is important you inform the owner. If you cannot locate the owner, simply leave your contact information and the collision information on a written notice.
    7. Repair
Accidents can sideline your vehicle, but it’s crucial that you get back on the road and back to your busy schedule. After a collision, you have the right to get your vehicle repaired at any body shop of your choosing. The Service Department at our Huntington Beach area Chrysler dealer will certainly get your car back in pristine shape.

A collision can be a scary and stressful situation that no one wants to be involved in. You must be prepared to assume legal and financial responsibility in the event of one though. Do not let your emotions or feelings get the best of you, and always clear your head before deciding who is at fault. Never feel like you’re pressured into admitting fault or giving an opinion on the crash. If need be, consult with an attorney before giving a statement.
